News in SciencePosted in ScienceCable and wireless internet service provider Telstra has completed the construction of its world’s largest fiber optic cable network that will stretch from Australia to the United States, and it’s going to have a very long way to go to reach all those homes in the US and other countries that have fiber optic broadband service.
Tens of thousands of homes in Australia and the United Kingdom are already connected to the Telstra fibre optic network.
Telstra’s fibre optic networks are designed to carry internet to and from each home via an interconnected cable that runs from the Sydney CBD to the inner suburbs.
Telstra’s network, which will be the biggest in the world, is expected to have the capacity to handle 10 million homes at peak times and 100 million homes during the daytime.
The Australian Government is also investing $7.5 billion in infrastructure projects that will bring high-speed internet to every household in the country, and Telstra says it’s working to get the whole network to that point.
“We’re seeing the full capacity of the network in the next six months,” Telstra chief technology officer Mark Bicknell told ABC Radio in Australia.
“It’s a real-time system where we’re delivering fibre-optic cables every few kilometres.”
And when we have the infrastructure to go from the network to the home, it’ll be in the neighbourhood of 100,000 homes in just six months.
“Telstra is currently working with the Government on the project, but Bickney says the company is now looking at its international competitors.”
The next thing we’ve got to look at is what’s next, so we’re looking at what’s the next-gen infrastructure, what are the other players in the market,” he said.

The company’s previous version of the fibre optics was used in some telecommunications systems to provide a link to landlines, but it was very expensive to install and required costly infrastructure.
It was not until the advent of 3D printing technology that the technology could be made to be easily manufactured into an affordable package.”
Today’s 3D printers are so cheap and so fast that you can manufacture them for a fraction of what they were in the early days,” Telescope CEO Mark Evans said.”
Now we have a new generation of 3Ds that are a lot faster than the previous generation and you can print them out of your own home.
“While the technology is a great leap forward, it has been a tough journey for many companies to catch up to it, including Telstra.”
There’s a lot of things we have to do in terms of getting to the same level as Telstra, but we have done it, and we have been able to do it with a lot more technology,” Evans said in the ABC’s Q&A program last week.”

“But Telstra won’t have to wait long to be the largest internet provider in the entire world.
A report published by PricewaterhouseCoopers last week says that, by the end of the year, a total of 3.5 million households will have access to broadband in Australia, and they will use Telstra-based services such as Telco, Vodafone and Optus.
The report says that if Telstra is able to deliver on its goal of becoming the biggest internet provider, it could easily surpass Comcast as the biggest US internet service.”
By the end [of the decade], we believe Telstra could be the world’s biggest internet service company,” the report said.
